PAGE 1 There's a mystery to smoking a pipe... but it really isn't necessary to hire a private investigator to find the solution. SELECTING YOUR PIPE Spend some time and look at some of the various sizes and shapes of pipes on display. Does the shape enhance your facial features? Is it comfortable in your hand? Hold the pipe to your face in front of a mirror and see if it works with you from various angles.

PAGE 2 CLUE 2: CHOOSE A GOOD TOBACCO If you're going to become a pipe smoker, don't economize on smoking tobacco. Go for it! Choose a quality tobacco like amphora or Borkum Riff. Borkum Riff Ultra Lite is in fact an ideal tobacco for the new pipe smoker. The aroma of your pipe tobacco will eventually become such an important part of your personality—like the clothes you wear, or the aftershave you use--that you'll want to choose it with care. CLUE 3: PACKING YOUR PIPE To get your pipe off to a good start, pack it well but not too tightly...a pinch at a time. Fill the pipe half full the first few times to allow the "heel" to be broken in... then alternate, full and half full for ten or twelve bowl fulls. But don't do it all at once—spread it out over a week or two to keep the pipe tasting good.

Light the entire surface so the tobacco burns evenly. If your pipe goes out, it's normal, so don't worry about it. Simply tamp it down lightly with a tamper and relight. Don't puff wildly to keep it lit or you could irritate your tongue and hand. Relax... puff slowly and evenly... now you're discovering the real joys of pipe smoking. Think of any confirmed pipe smoker you've ever known. There's an air about him... a personal style. He's reflective, confident, not to be rushed... this is a man who takes time to enjoy life.

PAGE 4 CLUE 5: CARE AND MAINTENANCE Caring for your own pipes means never having to say "WHODUNIT?". When you've finished your smoke, remove the dottle (unsmoked tobacco) from the heel with a pipe tool or by gently tapping it out. Keep your pipe clean and sweet smelling. Clean the stem and shank with Dill's pipe cleaners after every few pipefuls. Carefully clean your pipe with a pipe cleaning solution before putting it away. Many prefer to leave the stems out overnight after cleaning so the pipe is fully dried out. When you've broken in your new pipe properly you've built up an even layer of carbon cake in your bowl. Do not allow this cake to accumulate over a dime's thickness. Once a month, or more often if necessary, carefully remove the excess carbon with a pipe reamer, as excessive carbon buildup will crack the bowl.

PAGE 5 CONGRATULATIONS... YOU'RE NOW A PIPE SMOKER! So you've done everything right and you're pretty pleased with yourself. You'll notice each pipeful becomes more pleasant and rewarding each time you light up. If you've ever used tobacco in other forms, you sense that there are fewer complaints from those around you when you're smoking your pipe... in fact, you've even checked out a few admiring glances from women who find the fragrances aromatic tobaccos leave behind pleasing and the pipesmoker an attractive individual.

PAGE 6 MYSTERY SOLVED... BUT CASE NOT CLOSED YET! Now it's time to go out and buy another pipe. In fact, buy two or three! Just as you change your clothes to suit the occasion, rotating your pipes keeps life interesting. More importantly, a pipe should be given a rest between smokes and allowed to cool off and dry out or it will turn soggy and rank. Building your collection is one of the pleasures of pipe smoking.
